BRIDGE NAME: I-5 Sutherlin Creek and County Road Bridges (SB & NB) - Replacement

LOCATION: Douglas County, OR

DESCRIPTION: The project involves replacement of the existing five-span Southbound and Northbound twin bridges on I-5 over Sutherlin creek in Douglas county, Oregon with new three-span 240 ft long Southbound (58’-110’-72’) and 210 ft long Northbound (58’-76’-76’) structures. The work is part of the I-5: Sutherlin-Roseburg Section design-build project, which involved repair/replacement of seven other bridges. The new three-span superstructures consist of precast prestressed concrete adjacent beams (48” boxes and 30” voided slabs) with HPC CIP concrete deck. While the seat type abutments were used for the southbound bridge, cap beams are being considered for the northbound structure at all bents. In both the structures, the end bents/abutments are supported on HP 12x74 driven piles while the intermediate bents consist of three 3’ steel pipe columns at each bent.

SCOPE: As part of the I-5 Sutherlin to Roseburg Design Build CH2M Hill, Inc. team, Athalye Consulting Engineers is responsible for the design of the twin bridges, stability check of the “to remain in place (due to environmental restraints) existing footings” at intermediate bents adjacent to the creek, preparation of the PS&E for the new replacement bridge structures, and construction support. Some of the design and detailing challenges encountered were: (i) superstructure-barrier (42” tall Type F) connection for TL-5 vehicular crash load, (ii) Girder-Bent Diaphragm connection for vertical shear, and (iii) deck-girder connection for horizontal shear. BRASS software is being used for the rating these bridges. The design and construction of the southbound structure was completed in a record time frame of 5 months from NTP to construction. This period included the demolition of existing southbound bridge, preparation of PS&E, permitting and construction phases. The design implemented the most recent ODOT standards and AASHTO LRFD design procedures.
