Bridge Name: San Jose Creek Bridge
Location: Pomona, CA

Description: San Jose Creek Bridge site is located south of the intersection of Temple Avenue and the proposed new extension of Campus Drive over the San Jose Creek in the City of Pomona, California. The bridge will cross the San Jose creek approximately on a normal alignment to the creek. The bridge will provide access to the existing University Village complex.

The bridge accommodates 2-12 ft lanes, 2-4 ft shoulders and 2-5ft sidewalks and Caltrans standard Type 26 barriers on each side. The bridge will have a crown at the centerline and 2% cross-slope. The span length for this single span structure was set at 46ft 9 in maintaining a minimum footing edge distance of 3ft 3 inch from the vertical outside edge of the creek channel wall. The pile distance from the same edge was set at 4 ft in per the geotechnical recommendations. This span provides an optimum length while meeting the horizontal clearance requirements for the channel.

The bridge superstructure consists of 11 units of Caltrans standard PC/PS concrete voided slabs (S IV-48). Other alternative superstructure types considered in type selection process were PC/PS I girder and the cast-in-place reinforced concrete slab. The PC/PS voided slab was favored due to the following reasons.

It provided the shallowest structure depth to accommodate the vertical profile constraint.
It will have minimum impact on creek by avoiding falsework.
Provided overall project economy.
The Substructure consists of diaphragm type abutments supported on 18” diameter CIDH piles. This type of abutment is able to adequately dissipate the seismic forces on to soil without causing pile damage. Unique features of the project include:

Caltrans Seismic Design Criteria
Located near active and potentially active faults
Liquifiable soils
