Bridge Name: I-80 East between I-680 Interchange to Route 12 (3 Bridges) Location: Solano County, CALTRANS District 04 Description: Athalye Consulting Engineers in association with URS Corporation was retained by CALTRANS, CCMB to prepare the Type Selection Report and Final PS&E for three bridges in Solano County near the City of Fairfield. The project proposed to widen the existing I-80 from 8 lanes to 10 lanes. To accomplish this the 3 bridges were modified in accordance with Caltrans SDC Version 1.2. Dan Wilson Creek, Br No23-0006L/R (Widen) The existing twin bridges were modified by providing a median widening to accommodate the additional lanes. The existing bridges consisted of a three span reinforced concerete slab superstructure supported on spread footings. Based on structural compatibility the widening consisted of a similar superstructure that was doweled to the existing bridges. The retaining wall between the existing abutments was utilized as the abutment for the widening. Suisun Creek Bridge, Br No. 23-0007 L/R (Modify) The median for the existing bridge was modified by removing the fill material that separated the eastbound and westbound I-80 lanes. While the modification of the median was minor, the evaluation of the existing bridge superstucture and substructure made this a unique project. The existing bridge evolved in four stages from 1932 to 1960 with various modification consisting of adding a new bridge, major bridge widenings, sliver widening and also the addition of a new superstructure on top of the existing superstructure. Substructure stability evaluation was also performed. Suisun Valley Road O.C., Br No. 23-0007 L/R (Modify) The modifications to this bridge were primarily associated with a non-standard vertical clearance. The scope of our modifications included the verification of the adequacy of the existing restrainers, design of a new restrainer system to meet the required minimum vertical clearance.
