| Bridge Name: |
10 Bridges/Culverts Inspection
| Location: |
La Habra, CA
| Description: |
Athalye Consulting Engineers has performed the inspection of 10 bridge structures for the Division of Public Works /Engineering, La Habra, California. This encompassed three Bridges (2 PC/PS concrete cored slab bridges and 1 PC/PS concrete T-girder bridge) and 7 single span and multispan reinforced concrete culverts. The objective of this project was to assist the city of La Habra in routine bridge inspection. Two of the three bridges have open end seat type abutments and one bridge has closed end backfilled cantilever abutments supported on concrete piles. All the culverts have earth fill ranging from 0.3 m to 3.0 m on the top. All the structures cross Coyote creek in the City of La Habra.
The main focus of the inspection was to determine the physical and functional condition of the bridges, identify the existing problems and recommend prepare repair strategy to fix the problems.
While all the structures were found to be in overall good condition except a few hairline/minor cracks and minor concrete falls, it was noticed that the railings of one bridge (55C0252) have fractured at all the four corners. The details of the condition of this bridge and the repair strategy prepared by ACE are described below.
Bridge 55C0252
Conditions of the Structure
| The structure is generally in good condition with the following exceptions: |
All the four corners of the concrete railing have fractured. The ends of reinforced concrete (RC) barrier sit on top of the abutment without any provision for thermal expansion. Fracture of the barriers is attributed to the structure and approach settlements in conjuction with thermal expansion that have occurred over a period of time.
Moderate size horizontal and vertical cracks were observed on top of the bridge deck slab. |
| Repair Recommendations |
Repair fractured concrete railing at the NE and NW corners
Patch the spalled concrete at the SE and SW corners of the east and west barriers respectively |
Treat the bridge deck with methacrylate to fill the deck cracks. |
Overlay asphalt concrete at the approach roadway near the north abutment to help smooth transition/riding from roadway
on to the bridge.
